Which is better for competitive fencing: front or back zip jacket?

I am planning on buying a fencing set for competition, but am not completely sure whether or not a front zip jacket would be better than a back zip? Also, if you can, could you tell me the difference between a Chinese and European made blade for foils?|||From my experience, back zip jackets are for practice (i.e. the beginning of your fencing life), but for competitions definitely go with the front zip; it%26#039;s much easier to get out of, when you need to show the referee your underarm-protector(plastron), and to cool off - it%26#039;s better to just reach over and un-zip the top of the jackets.

Get a front zip jacket %26amp; front zip lame%26#039;.

Chinese blades are usually cheaper than European blades,

they are not very durable or of poor temper, and they snap, bend, and rust easily. But I had one that actually lasted longer that my european one, although it got a weak spot and it would bend easily, it was a good value.

Although some European blades are also lower quality.|||Definitely go with the front zip jacket. Some people need help with a back zip--get the front zip so you can dress yourself. The German blades are some of the best, and of consistent quality, but often a blade is a blade. If you are from the US, you can get two Russian blades (which I%26#039;d recommend over the similarly priced Chinese blades) for the price of one German blade.

It doesn%26#039;t sound like you are ready for competition yet--you would have a jacket already. For any official competition, the required minimum equipment is jacket, mask, glove, underarm protector, breast protector for women, knickers, long socks, two foils, two body cords, and an electric vest. In reality, you need at least another foil, maybe two, because you never know when one will crap out on you.

If you tell me which country you live in, I could advise on which suppliers I%26#039;ve used that might be good for you. In the US, Blade/1800Fencing/Physical Chess (these co%26#039;s are owned by the same people) have the best weapons, Blue Gauntlet has the best jackets and pants (they are good Chinese knock-offs of the German clothes). The cheap masks are very good at both those places, but spend a few more bucks at Tripellete to get a really comfortable mask, or get an Allstar or Uhlmann mask.

Best of luck--fencing is expensive, but worth it!
