What do I need to get started in the sport of fencing?

I%26#039;ve wanted to fence for many years, but it ain%26#039;t happenin%26#039; yet! I%26#039;d like to know a few things, however, and be prepared if I%26#039;m able to actually afford it someday! :)


What equipment will I need and how much will it cost?


What skills will I be needing and how do I improve them?


What muscles need to be built up and which exercises should I do?


Thanks so much for your help!|||First, you should find a fencing club in your area, you would be surprised where they are at!!





What you will need, will depend on which weapon you take up. There are 3; Foil, Epee, and Sabre. All require different swords, Epee requires knickers, long knee socks, fencing jacket along with a mask, glove and fencing shoes. For foil you need to add an electric vest. For Sabre you will need to add an electric jacket. Sabre has a different mask from Foil and Epee.





Most clubs will loan you the outfits and swords for the first month, and then should be able to help you find your equipment.





Best work outs are building your legs and arm muscles and stamina. Running, soccer, basketball is a great way to start. In the gym, grab a trainer and have them show you the best machines to build strong leg muscles and strong arm muscles. You will be doing a lot of lunges and extensions. It is VERY important to learn to stretch properly.





Fencing is a STRONG mental game as well as physical. It%26#039;s like playing a mental/physical chess, except that you have to think FAST.

Skills needed- balance, co-ordination, endurance.
