With American fencers doing so well (second place saber team, 1st, second, and third women%26#039;s individual saber, third place women%26#039;s saber team) this years olympics, do you think fencing will gain popularity? I am hoping it will interest people in the sport. What do you think?|||I do think the sport will gain in popularity. Sports, and any activity, tend to receive broader attention when they are in the news. Positive coverage, such as the recent successes on the international stage of the Beijing Olympics, raises awareness. Children who enjoyed swashbuckler movies are now thinking they can learn sport fencing and swash all they want. Parents who were looking for some activity for their kids beyond the usual soccer and T-ball are considering a different sport that their children can participate in.
To Britt, who said there is no fencing in Texas, sorry, dude, there are at least 50 clubs in Texas, from Dallas to San Antonio, from El Paso to Galveston. Kelly Hurley, one of the female Olympic epeeists fences out of San Antonio.|||Saberista, I loved your answer to! Report Abuse
|||I would love to see fencing gain some popularity. It%26#039;s such and under-rated sport. The problem is that people don%26#039;t know how to approach it. Fencing is still seen as the sport of the old rich guys who live in mansions. Whenever people find out that I am a fencer, their first reaction is of disbelief. Then, they are really interested because they%26#039;ve only seen it in the movies or the Olympics. We have a ways to go, but more and more people are getting interested. I love fencing and I hope get interested - especially with how well we did in the olympics.|||probably up in the north, where all those guys were from (like Rhode Island, New Hampshire, I think one was Connecticut), but we don%26#039;t even have fencing facilities in Texas. Where I live it%26#039;s all about gymnastics....there is a WOGA institute (World of Gymnastics Academy) in Frisco that Nastia Liukin trains at, as did Carly Patterson (the %26#039;04 all around winner) before her. Track n field is popular here too, and boxing. |||Many colleges offer fencing as a varsity sport but it really has to come down to the high school levels to really grow as it should. Of course there would be insurance issues due to students ages and those nervous parents who think it might be a bit too dangerous. But if properly presented as the fine sport it is, it can grow rapidly. I always thought it was quite cool! |||Probably not since it has been around for a long time and most people have little understanding or interest of the sport. It will probably remain a fringe sport like table tennis, shooting, or team handball.|||No - one of the reasons for the US%26#039;s added success is the fact that fencing is dropping off in the traditionally powerful countries of west and eastern Europe. |||no the rules are to restrictive its 2 dimentional.
if they could so much as circle each other or something it would be better but they cant step of the length of carpet.
less rules = more flexable = more interesting = more popular.|||No, even with 3 decades of Star Wars lightsabre action, fencing will still remain unpopular.
|||I don%26#039;t think so. The sport just ain%26#039;t that exciting to watch. Two people just poking each other is just meh to watch.|||No, sorry its just not that entertaining to watch.....
