You have 640m of fencing available. You need to fence in a rectangular area of fields that is then subdivided into three parts with fencing parallel to one of the sides of the rectangle. What should the dimensions be to enclose the maximum area using all of the available fencing?|||Ok...this should be good. Here is a diagram:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/3098...
Here:
x = length
y = width (also the side parallel to where it is all divided)
Given:
Amount of fence = 640
Need max area.
In this example the total amount of fence used is:
fence_used = perimeter of field + fence used inside enclosure
640 = (2*x + 2*y) + ( 2y )
640 = 2x + 4y
640 - 2x = 4 y
y = 160 - (1/2)*x
Area becomes:
area = x*y
area(x) = x*(160 - (1/2)*x)
area(x) = 160x -(1/2)*x^2
To find max and min of a function find area%26#039;(x), make it equal to zero and solve for x:
area%26#039;(x) = 160 - x
0 = 160 - x
x = 160 --%26gt; this should be your max value
Now since:
y = 160 - (1/2)*x
Plug in x:
y = 160-80 = 80
For max area the dimensions should be:
x = 160
y = 80
Check:
640 = 2x + 4y
2*(160) + 4*(80) = 640
LS == RS
Correct.|||Let%26#039;s look at what you%26#039;ve got. You%26#039;ve got 640 m of fencing, and you have to use all of it. Let%26#039;s draw a picture.
---------------
|....|....|....|
---------------
Kind of, except without the dots in between.
You have two long sides. And, you have 4 short sides. Normally, to find the perimeter of a rectangle, you simply do 2L + 2W. But, we don%26#039;t have just 2 widths... we have 4 widths.
So...
2L + 4W = 640
But, we can%26#039;t solve that because it has two variables. We need another equation.
If you look at your picture, perhaps two of the widths add up to one of the lengths... yeah? Let%26#039;s try that and see if it works.
2W = L
Substitute 2W for the L in the first equation.
2(2W) + 4W = 640
4W + 4W = 640
8W = 640
W = 80
If W = 80, then...
2W = L
2(80) = L
160 = L
Let%26#039;s test and see if these dimensions fulfill the requirements. We have four widths, and if each one is 80 m, then we have used 320 m in fencing with the widths. If we have two lengths, nad each one is 160 m, then we have used 320 m in fencing there.
320 m + 320 m = 640 m
It works. So, the dimensions are 160 m x 80 m.|||Total length of fence (P) = (perimeter of bounding box) + (length of first subdividing fence) + (length of second subdividing fence)
= 2*L + 2*W + W + W
= 2*L + 4*W
i.e. L = (P - 4W) / 2
Constraint: P = 640m
Area = L * W
= W * (P - 4W) / 2
Area extremum when dA/dW = 0
dA = 0.5 [(P - 4W) + W*(-4)] dW = 0.5 [P - 8W] dW
dA = 0 : W = P / 8
so
L = (P - 4W) / 2 = 0.5 P (1 - 0.5) = (1/4) P|||its_victoria08, how do you know that 2W = L. You drew the picture and just assumed that without any valid reasons.

What kind of footing and fencing for my outdoor horse arena?
It is clay / red dirt. It has been recently rated and I want sand but not sure if I should use anything other than sand. Also I need a good not to expensive fencing that I can use as a turnout also.|||Since you%26#039;ve got clay, you need to assess your drainage during the wet months. A big downfall of many outdoor rings I%26#039;ve ridden in is they tend to get one spot that make a little lake when it rains or when the snow melts. Some places mix in gravel with the clay and overlay sand to help with drainage. I%26#039;d ask a contractor or even someone at a garden center about how to kep your ring from flooding and keep the sand layer from washing away.
The vinyl fencing (with or without the electric strip) isn%26#039;t too expensive, and probably the best for pasture fencing. Or you could always go with the typical sturdy wood set-up. Lumber is fairly cheap.

I want to start a fencing (swordfighting) club at my school. How to go about it?
I know enough about fencing that I could mediate it, make sure everyone participates in a safe manner, and teach at least the beginners. I foresee a lot of problems convincing the school administration that it%26#039;s safe, though.|||The first step I would take is to upgrade my USFA membership to a coach membership. Most importantly, this provides you with general liability coverage that extends to all your fencing and coaching events and activities, both USFA sanctioned and non-sanctioned. This will do a lot to convince the school that you%26#039;re exercising due diligence. Renew your membership on-line at the USFA site http://www.usfencing.org/usfa/.
Also at the USFA site, you%26#039;ll find important reference documents covering the rules of fencing, athletes handbook, and so on.
The US Fencing Coaches Association has a web site with useful information such as schedules of coaching clinics.
The USFA hosts a fencing coaches college every summer (except on Olympiad years, no coaches college this year) in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the Olympic Training Center. You should make plans to attend next year. The program is designed to teach you how to be a coach. It is is an excellent program at a good price.
As far as convincing officials, parents and athletes that the sport is safe, have them try to find any instance of an injury more serious than an ankle sprain. I%26#039;ve googled it and haven%26#039;t found any reliable report in recent years. Contrast that with football, where every Friday night in the fall athletes will be carried off the field with concussions or worse.

Minimize the amount of fencing to close in a field of carrots?
Fence in a rectangular pasture to keep out rabbits where carrots are grown. The field is along a straight stream that doesn%26#039;t need to be fenced. You need 900,000 square meters of pasture. What should be the dimension of the pasture that will minimize the amount of fencing?|||First you need to get all of the factors of 900,000 and group them into the pairs that equal 900,000
Then add times each number by 2 and add them together
See which is the smallest one and then that is the smallest amount of fencing.
Factors of 900,000
Logically though the smallest number pair would be the factors that are the closest together.
E.g. Factors of 10
= 1,10
=2,5
1*2+10*2=22
2*2+5*2=14
So find the factor pair that is the closest together and then you have an answer

What is the best underground fencing for giant breed dogs?
I need to get an underground fence for my Great Pyrenees, but I am not sure what is the best kind. She%26#039;s about two years old, and is just shy of 100 lbs. Right now she is tied up, and I can%26#039;t stand it anymore. Putting up a fence is not an option. (I tried, and she just walks over it.) And she really doesn%26#039;t like to live indoors all the time, so an underground fence is pretty much the only choice. Anyone with underground fencing - what brand do you suggest?|||I know that Innotek makes a good underground fence. (I%26#039;ve included a link to some Innotek products....sadly, no commission for me!)
More important than the fence is the collar unit. A good underground fence will have a steadily increasing ultrasonic audio response as the dog moves closer to the fence, rsulting in a shock if the dog gets up to the line. Also, make sure the shock is appropriate for a dog of your size. Too small of a shock won%26#039;t faze the dog; too large will knock it senseless.
Other piece of advice - plant plenty of flags so the dog knows where the new boundary lies. As time goes on, GRADUALLY remove the flags.
Good luck!|||PetSafe has a great fence too. See http://www.radiofence.com Report Abuse
|||Honestly, underground fencing is not a great idea. I suppose that chaining is worse, but the underground fencing comes with its own problems. The device can malfunction and 1)she gets out of the yard; or 2)she gets continuously shocked. Also, if she runs past the underground fencing, she won%26#039;t want to come back in the yard for fear of being shocked again. Plus, underground fencing doesn%26#039;t stop other animals (wild or domestic) or people from getting into the yard.
If she has walked over regular fencing in the past, I%26#039;d recommend some better fencing.

What type of fencing is suitable for both horses and cattle?
My family is planning on moving our horses out to our own property this summer along with some beef cattle (5-10). What type of fencing is safe enough for my horse but sturdy enough for cattle?|||ride that horsie oo yea. you could send me a pic of you riding a horse thata be so cool like umm go ride the horse and then dont fall u should get a big fence though like one from the internet or somthing|||Yeah. Horses and cows are drastically different. It%26#039;s acceptable and safe to put cattle out with barbed wire but the same fence will tear a horse to shreds.
I would highly suggest a wooden fence with at least three rails, 4.5%26#039; to 5%26#039; high. If you ran electric wire along the inside it should keep everyone inside.|||dont use barbed wire. it%26#039;s very dangerous for horses. I%26#039;ve seen horrible wounds from it.

How do fencing coaches choose a sword for you?
I am soon going to pick up fencing and I am wondering how do coaches pick a sword for you during training. Obviously, there are only three swords to choose from, but how do they pick for you? Is it by speed, reflexes, or something? Thanks in advance for the answers.|||You choose which style of fencing you want to do, foil, epee, or sabre, and then the choice is made. If, after a few lessons, your maestro sees that you are more suited for a different weapon/style than the one you initially chose, then he will guide you into that one. If not, then you are in your style until YOU decide to change it.
In PSAL H.S. fencing, the only weapon competed in is foil; tournaments offer all three. [Not sure about collegiate-level fencing.)|||That may be true in your case, but most of the time you start with foil. Almost always. Unless the club has only one weapon. Report Abuse

I have golden retriever so i don%26#039;t need super high fencing i just need somethign fairly cheap and quick, no invisible fecnes though.|||There is that %26quot;chicken wire%26quot; stuff It is really cheap. People use it to rope off gardens ect ect|||Basic chain link fence. Normally can even be fully installed within 1 or 2 days depending on the size of the space to be fenced in.|||Try field fence,it is 38 inches or 48 inches high,comes 100 to 330 feet to a roll and you use t-bar posts to hold it up secured with bailing twine or fence wire. it has 4 inch by 6 inch holes at the bottom and 6 by 6 towards the top. It ain%26#039;t the prettiest,but it works. Keeps in my australian shepherd and husky/shepherd mix.|||Go with Heather B. The chicken wire is dirt cheap, and easy to install with basic tools that you should have around the house. Them buggers are strong, and hardheaded when they get the notion.
If the dogs safety is at risk, the you want the small guage chain link. The lower in height, the cheaper the price, but Goldies can go airborn when they want to. Does they type of fencing on a residential property affect the appraisal value in south carolina?
We are purchasing a property where the appraiser has valued the privacy fence as if it is basic horse fencing, which I feel there is a clear difference in those types of fencing. We have been told that it does not matter what type of fencing it is and there is nothing we can do to change the value of the fence. I%26#039;m just confused because I feel that brand new privacy fencing would be worth more than a basic horse fence. It requires much more wood product and the cost of instalation for a privacy fence is much more. If anyone has any information regarding appraisal guidelines in South Carolina regarding fencing, please contact me. I just don%26#039;t want to get screwed.|||If you have the appraisal, look at any adjustments that were made for fencing. GENERALLY, an appraiser uses comparable properties to the subject property. What that means is; a 3br/2ba, fenced yard .50 acres - the appraiser will look for properties that have sold in the last 6 month (up to one year) within 5 miles of the subject property that are MOST like the subject.
Here is an example, (just had this the other day) home with 2500 sq ft screened in pool, comparables that were used did not have screened enclosures - the appraiser adjusted 6,000 for a screened enclosure. Now, ask any homeowner and the screen enclosure COSTS more than 6K. You will find this true in MOST cases when dealing with (fencing, pools, porches, etc) What that %26#039;upgrade%26#039; costs vs. the value it adds is not the same.
You are not getting %26#039;screwed%26#039; because the fence has value TO YOU, and that is important. It is a buying feature for you. The appraiser uses what is usual and customary adjustments in that area. But, I do mortgages ALL over the US, and a fence is a relatively LOW item for value in ANY state; with the exception of a privacy WALL with a gate.
Hope this helps,|||Alyssa, while mentioning it to a prospective buyer may or may not prove to be a valuable amenity on a property, the utility of it is what appraiser is looking at. You never get dollar for dollar back on improvements anyway, especially those that do not impact the house or living quarters. It%26#039;s a fact of life. This type of improvement would benefit you at the moment or you wouldn%26#039;t have spent the money to install it. However, the value is in eye of the beholder (buyer) and they determine value. In this case the appraiser is trying to determine based on other similar sales, the value based on utility of the item or improvement. Apparently this appraiser did not see a considerable difference in the properties sold in your area with fencing.|||It really doesn%26#039;t matter. The true value is the price your willing to pay for this property. Don%26#039;t get caught up on an appraisal that can be very subjective depending on the appraiser used.
